An electric generator (also known as engine-generator) converts mechanical to electrical energy to provide power in areas where there is no electricity or when there is excessive voltage or amperage fluctuations. Many places that require a temporary ad-hoc set up, such as construction sites, movie sets, fairs, carnivals and outdoor wedding arenas, use generators as the primary source of electricity. Generators provide very useful source of backup power in case of power outages and after natural disasters. Generators are usually very easy to transport and a medium sized generator can be mounted on a trailor and provide enough electricity for a small to medium commercial job site.
Portable generators can power things such as most standard 120/240v electric power tools, lighting equipment, fans, blowers. Some of them have automatic idle control as fuel conservation and noise control features. They are typically small enough to be carried by one or two adults.
